"To encourage a culture of high expectations that

Dear Parents

Kia Ora Tena Katou Katoa

The year has started extremely positively, and I am delighted to be able to present to you what is in effect the first Newsletter covering the happenings of 2004. We have been extremely pleased with the way everyone has returned so positively, students have settled quickly in to their classroom programmes, and our new students have adapted quickly to their chosen school.

It is interesting to note in the media of the increasing awareness in New Zealand of the difficulties caused by the transition from Primary and Intermediate school to secondary school for most young people – something we have been aware of and addressing through our innovation programme. This is the third year we have had the programme, and we are now able to use statistical data gathered from a variety of sources to identify the significant gains made – both academically and in important areas such as the attitude these students have to education, and the importance they place in, and enjoyment they gain from their schooling. Evidence obtained through our testing and survey programmes show that not only have students maintained their academic development at the same pace as the previous eight years they spent in the Primary school system, they are now actually achieving in advance of that level. Similarly, we can demonstrate that students’ attitudes are more positive and personal expectations are higher at the end of Year 10 than they were when they entered Year 9. Those in the innovation classes are exhibiting even greater gains than their peers in the more traditionally organised classes. While difficult to explain simply in a newsletter, the very clear message we are able to take from the information we have gained is that what we are doing is resulting in exciting and positive gains for our students.

ABSENCE REQUESTS:

Where students are wishing to be absent for reasons other than those covered by the Education Act, I would ask that parents write to me seeking permission. While generally we are happy to support students by meeting such requests, it is important that we are informed prior to the absence. Parents need to also be aware that assessments are occurring throughout the year – and for senior classes these often contribute to the qualifications students are working to achieve. Inevitably absences can interfere with course coverage, and may have implications for assessment opportunities. It is unreasonable to expect staff to have additional workload imposed on them by such absences, and while we are happy to assist as much as reasonable, the majority of the responsibility will rest with the students themselves.

ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY:

Closely allied to the issue of absence is our continued thrust to have students attend, and be punctual. It is stating the obvious that absence from class interferes with progress in class work. We would ask that parents support us in ensuring your sons and daughters attend school regularly, and maintain a high standard of punctuality. All absences must be explained by communication with the school – generally this will be in the form of a note written by a caregiver.

BOARD ELECTIONS:

I hope everyone is now well aware that the triennial elections to appoint members of the Board of Trustees is being held this year. The electoral roll is now being compiled, and will be available for inspection at the school office from 3 March. You may also telephone the office to confirm you are on it, if you wish. Every eligible voter will be receiving a nomination form at the end of February, and I would urge parents to think seriously of putting yourself forward for a position on our Board – a very important part in the operation of our school.

SCHOOL BUSES:

Some of our students who make use of the school transport provided to and from Whangarei Girls’ High School and Whangarei Boys’ High School have been informed that those buses are overloaded and they are no longer eligible to travel on them. At this stage it is very difficult for us to understand what is happening, as this is completely contrary to the practice that has been in place for many years. What we are now being informed, however, is that the right for secondary school age students who live further than 4.8kms from their nearest secondary school, to have transport assistance provided to their nearest school, is no longer the case. If true, this is a significant change in what we believed to be student entitlement, and a significant change on what has been the accepted practice for many years. Unfortunately, we are being told of developments with little time to inform parents – sometimes in fact hearing of what is happening from parents who have been given information from other sources. None of this is satisfactory – for us or for you, and I would like to assure you we will be working hard to try and clarify exactly what is happening, and keep you informed of the implications of these significant changes that appear to be being forced on us.

MESSAGES AT THE OFFICE:

From time to time parents need to get a message to your sons or daughters. While we are happy to try and arrange for delivery of these messages if it is at all possible, I would ask you to keep such requests to times of real emergency. It is often quite time consuming for the office staff to locate students, especially if there is any urgency. If you intend dropping lunch, or other items off at the office, please ensure the student is aware of that, and knows to come to the office to collect without being sent for.

SCHOOL UNIFORM:

We make no apology for being more strict on enforcing uniform expectations this year. Parents and students were informed of this intention in the correspondence that went home in January, and statements such as “she was allowed to wear this last year” are of no relevance – if garments are not school uniform they will not be permitted.

Parents also need to be aware that uniform decisions, while in the final instance made by the Board of Trustees, follow recommendations which come from a committee with parent, Board, student and staff representatives. If there is any aspect of the uniform you would like changed, address a letter to the committee, and forward to the office. If you don’t want our school to have a uniform, express that opinion to the Board.

SMOKING POLICY:

The Board of Trustees has been informed that new legislation requires schools to maintain a “smoke-free” campus at all times. Anyone who makes use of our school therefore needs to realise that smoking is not allowed anywhere on the grounds or in any of the buildings, at any time of the day or night.

Board of Trustees

BOT Election:

The Board of Trustees Election countdown has begun and it is important for all parents and caregivers to be considering standing for election for the five parent representatives we have on our school’s Board. The national theme of the 2004 election is ‘e tu tangata’ – ‘stand and be counted’ and I urge you to give serious thought to putting your name forward. Nominations open on 5 March and must be returned no later than 19 March, the date nominations close. Voting papers will be issued to all eligible voters by 24 March and will need to be returned by 2 April. Results will be declared on 8 April. The school office can confirm your eligibility to stand and/or vote and as voting papers will be posted, if you have changed addresses recently please confirm that the school has your correct postal address.

ERO Visit:

Although the current Board’s term of office is almost at an end, we have a busy start to 2004 with an Education Review Office (ERO) visit due at the beginning of March. This is part of ERO’s regular cycle of scheduled visits (our last ERO audit was in 2000) and will focus on student achievement and school processes. We are looking forward to sharing with them the exciting new initiatives and developments happening in our classrooms and the positive outcomes we are now seeing for our students as a result.

New Smoke-Free Laws:

Most of you will probably have heard by now that the Government introduced new legislation at the very end of last year making all schools ‘smoke-free’. This means that by law there is no smoking allowed in any areas of our school grounds and buildings either during school hours or at any other time including when the facilities are being used by outside groups. There is no longer any discretion for us to set aside a designated smoking area within the school site, and both the smoker and the Board are liable to prosecution if this new law is not complied with. I am confident that our students, staff, parents and caregivers will abide by this new legislation and in doing so encourage and promote the expectation of the wider community to do the same. Signs reminding everyone of our smoke-free status have been strategically placed around the school.

Claire Watts - Chairperson

Computer Information

A considerable amount of work has been carried out on our computer system over the past two months. Allan Halvorson (our Computer Technician) and Eelco Kamphuis (Network Consultant) have put in many long hours to ensure we have a state of the art network. Many thanks, Allan and Eelco, for your time and expertise.

We now have 175 new computers up and running with XP Pro and Office 2003. There are many advantages to the new system and we are fortunate to have such modern facilities.

Part of the new system is a print charging and monitoring system. Students will be provided with $5 of printing free of charge (which equates to 100 sheets). After the initial 100 sheets have been printed, students will need to pay for additional printing (minimum $5 per 100 sheets).

Sue Holmes – Senior Manager: Curriculum

Bus Bay

Please note that the bus bays must be left vacant for the buses to offload and pick up students between 8.15am-8.45am and 2.45pm-3.45pm. Cars parked in this area make it difficult for the bus drivers to pull in off the road, resulting in a dangerous situation for other road users.

It would also be appreciated if parents and visitors to the school would refrain from parking across the private driveways in Wilkinson Avenue as this has been causing inconvenience to the street’s residents.

In future, Kerbside Services will be notified of cars parked illegally.

Mike Goodwin – Bus Supervisor

International Students

This year we welcome 15 new students to Kamo High School from Japan, Germany, Korea, Finland, China, Malaysia, Brazil and Thailand. All the new students have been placed with a New Zealand family by our new homestay manager, Mrs Michelle White.

Many of the new students had had contact with Kamo High School before arriving in New Zealand through email letters with their assigned ‘kiwi buddy’. The first two days at school involved an orientation, English language testing, meeting their buddies and a kiwi barbeque lunch, including hokey pokey icecream! All students are now happily settled in and many have made new friends and are enjoying studying in English. A highlight for them was the Whanau Swimming Sports; the colour, the spirit, the competitiveness of the Whanau was something they could never have imagined! It was good to see so many of them getting involved as well.

Congratulations to two International students who were selected as school prefects for 2004: Lena Wehreim from Germany and Anna Byun from Korea. Both students have outstanding leadership ability and they demonstrated this in so many ways last year.

NZQA - Fees for 2004

For 2004, the following fee structure will apply:

Entry    Fee
Up to 48 credits or credit equivalents or fewer     $75 per candidate
All other candidates with the exception of those entering more than 3 Scholarship subjects     $150 per candidate
Scholarship subject entry over 3 subjects     $75 per subject

Fees should be paid to the school office. A late penalty fee of $25 will be added to payments made after 23 July 2004.

TABLE OF FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE

Eligible for beneficiary or income based assistance         Not eligible for beneficiary or income based assistance
One child entering qualifications    $35          Full fee
Two or more children entering qualifications    $35 per child          $100 per child with a maximum of $200 per family

Your completed application must be sent to school for processing before 1 June. Please apply to
Mrs Beauregard for Financial Assistance if you feel you may be eligible.

Another form of assistance we as a school can offer is to start taking payments towards the total cost of the fees from families immediately. It is perhaps easier to pay $5.00 a week over a period of time, than to have to find a much larger sum of money all at once. If you wish to make use of this means of fee payment, contact the school office or Mrs Beauregard for details.

Further details about fees and financial assistance will be available in section 4.2.2 of the 2004 Rules and Procedures on the NZQA website at: www.nzqa.govt.nz/ncea/acrp.

Nancy Beauregard – Qualifications Co-ordinator

Sports Equipment

Have you any spare soccer/tennis/basketballs, tennis racquets, cricket bats, etc., lying around at home that you no longer use? If the answer is yes, please consider donating them to Kamo High School to be used at interval and lunch times for our junior students. Any sports equipment would be most appreciated – bring it along to the Deans’ Office.

Karen Abel, Year 9 Dean - Mike Goodwin, Year 10 Dean

"Guys & Dolls"

This year’s production is going to be FANTASTIC!
Auditions have been called and the cast is going to be STUPENDOUS!
The orchestra is getting locked down and it will be GIGANTIC!
The school’s staff is involved and they’re all ENERGETIC!

So, to see the most FANTASTIC, STUPENDOUS, GIGANTIC, ENERGETIC SHOW in the world, keep an evening free from the 11th of June until the 19th of June. Having a good time, won’t be a gamble!

From the Prefects

It was so exciting to start the year off at the Prefect leadership camp. Mr Steel and Mrs Crowe managed to torture every muscle in our bodies with extensive tramps and way-to-way early morning runs.

On the camp we really learned how to work as a team. We all came up with some awesome ideas on how to benefit our school.

One theme that continually arose during this fantastic weekend was “Lifting the Spirit” – this soon became our vision for this year. Whaka nui te wairua tanga (Lifting the Spirit) is what we, as the Prefects for 2004, intend doing. Our aim is to lift the spirit of the school to one of “excellence and pride” in all of the students at Kamo High School.

This year is going to be so exciting - we have such a great team:

Stationery Update

Wow!! What a huge number of students have completed stationery for this year, and they’re still coming. We had a steady flow of people through D2, particularly the mornings and night that we were open before school started. Being able to purchase stationery at school, hopefully made life a bit less complicated for those many families that supported this important beginning to the school year.

Unfortunately, we again had to deal with publishers who were unable to deliver text books on the agreed date. The majority of these books have now arrived, and have been distributed to students. I am still awaiting the delivery of the Year 12 Computing Workbook, and they are unable to give me a definite delivery date, but have said it should be within Term One.

Thank you to those parents and students who have come to me with queries, it is important to get these sorted now. While I may not be able to answer your query immediately, you will receive a reply within a couple of days. Please contact me on telephone 4351688 or Sheryl Riceman.

IMPORTANT: The current price list is no longer valid, and a new price list is available from the main office or the stationery shop. The shop is open daily from 8.30am – 8.40am, and all of interval.

And finally, a huge thank you to those wonderful PTA ladies, and Frank Kearney, who assisted me throughout the D2 sales. It just would not be possible to do it without the support of the PTA.

Art News

He toi whakaairo - He mana tangata
Where there is artistic excellence - there is human dignity

Kia ora, welcome to the first “Arts News” for ’04.

I am really looking forward to this year in the Arts.

In our school and in our wider community, there are now so many opportunities for us all to get involved, meet people, learn new skills, be creative, have fun, take risks, gain greater understanding, appreciate different cultures and get more satisfaction out of life via the Arts.

One of the biggest pleasures in my professional and personal life is to see people grow - for their “flames to be lit”. I feel privileged to be in a position where every year I see this happen in so many of our young people. I am convinced that being involved in the Arts is an opportunity to get more out of life and to leave our environment a better place. I hope to meet as many of you as I can throughout the year, and that together we can support each other in “lighting the flame.”

At the end of the year at our annual Arts Awards evening there is an opportunity for the Arts Faculty staff to recognize outstanding individual student achievement by presenting real “flame” trophies. I hope you will join us.

..."Light the Flame"

Photography Success ’03

As part of our school focus: "To celebrate success and promote pride" I must congratulate Photography students for some outstanding achievements.

In UB Photography, both Pixie Barrington (87%) and Michael Barron (86%) achieved scholarships for their outstanding portfolio’s - the highest marks ever awarded in Photography in Kamo High’s history. This places them in the top few % in the country. Both Michael and Pixie are studying Photography related courses this year at tertiary level. I’m sure you may be seeing more of their work in the next few years as their journey in the Arts continues. I am currently negotiating with them both to “show” their work at school, so we can appreciate the quality of their photographs and so we can share in their success. I’ll keep you informed at a later date.

Again in Photography, for the first time ever, a Year 12 student, Ruth Dryfhout, was successful in her application in gaining entry to study Photography at tertiary level.

Congratulations to you all.

What we Offer...

As an Arts Faculty our goal is “to increase the awareness and appreciation of the Arts at Kamo High School and in the wider community”

As an Arts Faculty we offer specialist courses in:

Next year we are also hoping to offer exciting new courses in Theatre Technology, Photoshop and Digital Imaging.

This is a reflection on where the future is heading for the Arts. Make no mistake there are many opportunities in the Arts for a very successful career. If you don’t believe me……. just ask Peter Jackson !

We also offer and promote many opportunities to experience the Arts outside the class / school - just for fun, as a hobby, or for “serious” fun. If you would like to promote your own group / organisation, or would like to start one, please let me know. One of my goals for this year is to extend my links with the local Arts community. I’d like to help strengthen both your group / organisation and our students’ appreciation awareness in the Arts.

The Arts Centre

Wow! Staff and Arts students are both getting more and more excited as the reality of many years of wanting, dreaming and planning are now becoming a reality. I have had several opportunities to have a wander around inside the building and think that we have something really special here - not just for Kamo High, but for the whole community. There are several spaces within the Arts Centre that I know few schools anywhere in NZ can rival for design and for the possibilities they offer to anyone who uses them.

We look forward to being able to welcome you sometime in early Term 2 when we officially open our doors for the first time. I can guarantee you will hear more from me about this in the next few months!

New Arts Staff

A warm welcome to two new members of the Arts Faculty - Brenda Meyer and Alisa Hollings.

Miss Brenda Meyer is teaching Dance at both junior and senior levels. She has considerable experience in traditional and contemporary aspects of Dance, and is also an ex Kamo High School Head Girl – great to have you back !

Miss Alisa Hollings is our new support staff member who will be the “face” of the Arts once we get into the Arts Centre. She is the first point of contact for students wanting info on anything regarding the Arts. Alisa is employed part-time and will be available at the Copy Centre on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for all your Arts enquiries.

Arts Council ‘04

The Arts Council is a group of interested (and interesting) students / staff who are the real driving force behind organising any “arty happenings” at school throughout the year.

Recently we had our very first meeting for the year. At this meeting we voted on key positions, and it is my very great pleasure to announce that Clayton Petera was voted as this year’s Chairperson. Congratulations and thanks to all those who took part. By the way this committee started out, I am sure that there will be lots more activity throughout the year.

If you missed the meeting, you are still more than welcome. We meet every Tuesday in S2 @ lunchtimes. We need people of all types and ages, so don’t think you have to be a world class “arty “person to join us. You just have to want to help the Arts. There are plenty of opportunities to show us your leadership or your “followship” throughout the year.

“Is anybody (famous) out there!?”

If you are aware of any past students who are doing well in the Arts, I’d love to “sing their praises” (they also make great motivational speakers for our students).

Thanks again to Brad Carter for his great “live” video feed at last years Arts Awards. Look out for Brad and the rest of “Steriogram’s” soon to be released CD “Schmack” – it should be in store any day. More good news for “Steriogram” as they’ve just secured a contract to appear on MTV in USA and Japan! I’m still tipping these guys to be one of NZ’s most successful ever bands (and I don’t say that every day!)- check them out.

I look forward to seeing you all sometime soon. Kind regards….

Ian Pritchard - Arts Faculty Co-ordinator

Sports

Sports Department goals for 2004:

Welcome to Sports at Kamo High School 2004!

The first term of 2004 is crammed full of sporting events that our students can participate in, the first being our Swimming Day which was held recently and included both Championship events and Whanau events. What an awesome, colourful occasion it was. Entries in the swimming champs were higher than usual which made for some thrilling finals. NZ Swimming representative, Mark Cooper, broke four Senior Boys' records - 1 length Freestyle, 1 length Backstroke, 3 lengths Freestyle and the Medley and he was pushed all the way by our German student, Gero Gorke - great international competition! We have a small squad going to the Northland Secondary School Champs at Bay College, but we are hopeful of good results – quality not quantity!

School Champions:

The Whanau Swimming afternoon was a spectacular affair with students getting into the full swing of inter-whanau competition by dressing in their appropriate colours and participating fully in the chant, Mexican wave, Whanau swim, Fairplay and Synchronized Swimming. The support from the hillside could be heard for miles! The 6 person relay (2 girls, 2 boys and 2 staff members) held during lunchtime the following week was a very close, exciting encounter with Rangi hanging on to 1st place by a whisker, Tapere storming through to a very close 2nd, and Kaha just fading at the end to 3rd. However Kaha still earned enough points to take the overall Whanau Swimming title, just 10 points ahead of Rangi, with Tapere and Waima in equal 3rd place. Moana were slightly behind in 5th place, although it was disappointing that Moanaites failed to appear for the relay event.

Our ATHLETIC CHAMPS will be held on Tuesday 2 March at Kensington Park 9:00am – 2:45pm. Students wanting to participate need to pre-enter at the Sports Office, get their permission slip signed by their parent/caregiver and return same. Students can either make their own arrangements to be at Kensington by 9:00 or can go by special bus from school at 8:45am and return to school at 3:00pm but must reserve a seat at the Sports Office. The inter-whanau relays will be held at school during lunchtime the next day (3 March). Athletes who qualify can then compete at the Northland Secondary School Champs the following week, 10 March, at Kensington Park also.

CRICKET is underway with Saturday competition and also the 1st XI in the Robertson Shield, the 3rd Grade playing in the Northpower Cup and the Girls’ team in the Northland Secondary Schools competition (dates and venues will be confirmed by newsletter to players). We appreciate the efforts of the coaches we have: Mel Millar, Mr Van Veen, Mr Henderson, Mr Whatmough, Dave Rouse, Phil Durham and the assistance received from the Kamo Club through Richard, David and Michael Pinny.

SENIOR VOLLEYBALL gets underway this week with the Girls’ Preliminary Tournament on Wednesday 25 and the Boys’ on Friday 27 February. The Northland Secondary School finals will be held at Kensington Stadium on Friday 5 March. The Volleyball nationals are at Tauranga 22 to 27 March and those players selected in the teams need to ensure they are making regular payments towards the cost.

SURFING CHAMPS were held at Ocean Beach last week with 30 surfers battling it out in the big surf. Winning results were:

Surfing Champs:
1st Roy Allen; 2nd Oliver Bone; 3rd Zal Ferguson

Boys’ Body Boarding Champs:
1st Jordon Hicks; 2nd= Dion Egan & Simon Spierer

Girls’ Body Boarding Champs: 1st Michelle Scott-Davidson; 2nd Nikola Croft; 3rd Erin McCulloch

Both Zal and Oliver are entered in the Northland Scholastic Champs to be held in Kaitaia, and we wish them well.

NETBALL trials are being held on Saturday 28 February in our new gym. The Juniors (Years 9 and 10) will be 10:00am to 12 noon and the Seniors 1:00 to 3:00pm. Players need to register at the Sports Office and pay $15 trial fee (which is part of their sub). Prior to that, fitness sessions will be held at school 3:40pm on Tuesday 24 and Thursday 26 February for any players interested in some pre-season training. Netball competition does not begin until Term 2.

NETBALL ACADEMY first session will be Tuesday 9 March at 7:00am in the gym. Members of the Academy have been on a fitness program during the summer so will be raring to go!

HOCKEY RALLY & TRIALS day should have been held by the time you read this newsletter. With only one turf being available at the moment it is difficult to get training time for the teams but players will be informed by student notices and a newsletter when times are confirmed. More coaches are needed, please, as well as a Hockey Club Chairperson. Our 1st XI Boys team will shortly have games against Westlake Boys' High and St Paul's of Hamilton.

BASKETBALL TEAMS will again be involved in the Western Heights Multi-Sport Tournament to be held in Rotorua on 1st & 2nd April. Our thanks to Adrienne and Steve Wong for organising this.

RUGBY training is underway on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school. Staff members, Ian Smith and Kevin James are taking the 1st XV team. During the rugby season mid-week games will be arranged with other school teams for a Kamo High School 2nd XV team (this will not interfere with Club competitions).

CONGRATULATIONS to some of our students who achieved highly during the summer:
