"To encourage a culture of high expectations that
celebrates success and promotes pride"

Dear Parents

Kia Ora Tena Katou Katoa

We have recently been visited by staff from the Education Review Office. It was an opportunity for us to share with them some of the excellent things which are happening in the school, and give them the opportunity to meet a number of the outstanding young people who proudly call Kamo High School “our school”. There will be a formal report which we will receive (and make available to the school community) forwarded to us in the next few weeks. The verbal report we received when they left us, however, clearly indicated the pleasure they had felt in being at the school, and the extremely positive impression they had gained of our class programmes, our staff and students, and the wide variety of activities available to and taken up by students. It has been a wonderful start to the year, and it was exciting to have our view confirmed by fellow professionals.

TIME CAPSULE:
The new Arts Centre has a cavity in which we feel it would be ideal to place a “time capsule”. If you have any items you think would be appropriate to include, or any suggestions for us to consider with regard to the contents, I would welcome hearing from you.

INTRUDERS:
Occasionally we have “outsiders” who come into the grounds without reporting to the office. Generally, these people are coming to visit students during the school day. I am sure it is obvious to everyone that there is the potential for the safety of our environment to be affected by outsiders who come in to the school in this way. Students have been told very clearly that they are not to in any way encourage the presence of people on the grounds in this way, and I would ask parents to reinforce this message for us. Clearly, anyone who has a legitimate reason to make contact with students during the day is welcome to do so by first making the necessary arrangements through the main office. I will contact the parents of students who are involved in incidents of this sort.

STUDENT HEALTH:
From time to time you will see items in the media regarding the difficulty caused for young people when they have inappropriate diets, come to school without an adequate breakfast, and do not get sufficient sleep. For us, one of the areas of concern we are currently feeling is the lack of sleep that many of our students seem to be suffering from. For too many, television in particular is a cause of them getting to sleep extremely late, and this has a direct impact on the quality of their work during the day.

I have included for your information some comments and ideas with regard to homework. The importance of the “lifestyle” of young people at times when they are not at school is highlighted by all these issues, and I would welcome an opportunity to talk with you about that – either if there is any way we can support you in managing your son’s or daughter’s time, or in any other way work more closely with you to achieve the best results for everyone of our students.

What can parents do to help?:

What do children gain from homework?

Principal

Board of Trustees

The ERO team completed its assurance audit in the school after seven busy days spent on site and the Board met with them several times during their visit. We are now looking forward to their written report which we hope will be received before the end of our Board’s term of office, and it will then be shared with the school community.

Nominations have now closed for the Board of Trustees elections and as there were just 5 nominations for the 5 parent representatives, there is no need to hold an election. You will be receiving further information about the new Board and completion of the election process during the next few days. Thank you to parents who considered standing, and particularly to those who agreed to be nominated, your support is appreciated.

Claire Watts - Chairperson

Cellphones

In the past, most students have managed the use of cellphones appropriately. Unfortunately there have been some recent cases where this is not so. Cellphones are to be turned off and out of sight during class time. The school will take no responsibility for lost, stolen or damaged phones. If the telephone rings or is used during class time, a teacher may impound it and the usual school procedures for return of property will apply. That is, a letter will be sent home and the phone must be picked up by a parent or caregiver. The school will not accept responsibility for any phone which is not picked up within four weeks.

Athol New...Congratulations

Dexcel Limited, on behalf of the New Zealand Dairy Industry, has awarded 50 scholarships for students to study at Lincoln or Massey Universities in 2004. To qualify students must be undertaking a degree in agriculture and have a particular interest in dairying.

Athol New, Year 13 at Kamo High School in 2003, is one of these students who will have his full, formal tuition fees paid by Dexcel this year. This scholarship will greatly assist Athol meeting the costs of university study at Lincoln University. The scholarship continues until course completion as long as grades are at an acceptable high standard.

Thirteen of the 50 scholarships were awarded to first year students who attended school in 2003 and are now beginning their tertiary studies. Thirty one students at Lincoln University and nineteen at Massey University are receiving these scholarships – the New Zealand Dairy Industry Undergraduate Scholarships (NZDIUGS), funded for the Dairy Industry through the industry good levy allocated by Dairy Insight. This significant support to outstanding young scholars is part of the Dairy Industry’s determination to encourage the best people into the industry as the future research scientists, farm advisers, farm managers, rural bankers and farm owners. New Zealand needs the capability of these young leaders to meet the productivity targets of our biggest export earner. Scholarship winners are mentored and supported through university and can expect to gain employment in a variety of positions, either on-farm or in the support areas, of this massive industry.

The closing date for the 2005 scholarships is 7 December 2004. A pamphlet with information on the scholarships will be sent to all New Zealand secondary schools later this year. The Dexcel website, www.dexcel.co.nz, also has the information required by students and teachers about the application process.

Congratulations and best wishes from us all, Athol.

Reader/Writer Assistance

Parents/caregivers who believe their children will qualify for reader - writer help during NZQA examinations this year should phone the school and leave a message for Mrs Smith. Please do so immediately as all applications must be received by NZQA by the end of March and there is a lot of testing and processing involved.

Numeracy Assistance

For senior students wishing to take advantage of the extra help offered, E2B is open for assistance with numeracy skills on Tuesday and Thursday lunchtimes.

International Students

All new International students were officially welcome to Whangarei by His Worship the Mayor, Mr Craig Brown. The Languages week was an opportunity for them to celebrate and share their culture with the school community. All students are well settled, enjoying their time studying at Kamo High School and living in New Zealand

National Young Leaders' Day

The National Young Leaders’ Day is being held at the Logan Campbell Centre in Auckland on Friday 7 May, for secondary students from the upper North Island. The day is designed for current or potential leaders. It aims to inspire students to serve their school with excellence and to reach their full potential as leaders.

As in previous years, a team of high profile leaders will be speaking, including some of the most influential people from sport, politics, community service, science, media and the arts. An updated list of speakers will be on the website soon at www.youngleadersfoundation.org. This is an excellent opportunity for students, at such an important time in their life, to be exposed to these speakers and challenged to be their best.

If your son or daughter is interested they need to register their name at the Deans’ Centre.

Languages Week

In week 5 of this term Kamo High School once again celebrated the cultural diversity of its staff and students with an International Language and Culture Week. The week got of to a great start with a Powhiri organised by the students who study Te Reo Maori. After welcome speeches by Mr Pou and Mr McDonald students from each country represented at the school gave a brief introduction of themselves in their own language and then sang their national anthem. The words of the national anthem were displayed on a large screen in the hall and all students could read along as the anthems were sung. There were some standout performances with some students being brave enough to even sing on their own in front of everyone!

International Day

International Day
Anna Byun, Jeffrey He and Joanne Park

On the Tuesday we celebrated Japanese culture and language – once again, food was very popular with students preparing sushi, yakitori (chicken kebabs) and okonomiyaki, which is a kind of Japanese pancake/omelette. In addition to the food, students were able to get their names written in Japanese characters, try on traditional Japanese clothes, play Japanese games and try their hand at origami. At lunchtime Mr Harris and Emil Pienaar showed off their not inconsiderable skills at a Karate demonstration.

Wednesday was the turn of Te Reo Maori.

Ko te mea tuatahi me mihi atu ki to tatou matua nui i te rangi,
ko ia te timatatanga me te whakaotinga o nga mea katoa.

Students of Te Reo Maori and Nga Toi came together and celebrated our language and culture on Wednesday. Students wove flowers out of flax, created poi earrings and did some bone work. The hall was tastefully decorated with harakeke, punga and menemene, and the displays included He Tangata Rongonui, Nga Tamariki a Rangi raua ko Papa, and Te Tiriti O Waitangi. Students also brought along their own taonga from home to display in our Whare Pupuri Taonga. All of the 100 + students managed to share a “boil up and fried bread” that all students had prepared earlier during the day. This was the ideal way to end a rather successful celebration.

On Thursday students from Thailand, Vietnam, Fiji, Korea and China took to the hall. Once again the students truly outdid themselves and organised excellent displays of information about their countries, food and languages. In particular the Korean students were very fortunate to have the assistance of many parents and Korean community members who came to school at lunchtime and played traditional instruments, including a fantastic drum demonstration outside the library. A demonstration of Tae Kwon Do was also held in the hall at lunchtime.

European Languages had the honour of closing off this very successful week. On Friday, the hall was taken over by “European Languages and countries”. This included French, German, Portuguese and our Brazilian students, Finnish and even a small display about England by two students who did not want their country to be left out! Our junior French students worked really hard on the display and we also had books and magazines that, pleasingly, proved to be popular with the visiting classes and students. The other countries represented all had great displays of books, posters, flags and samples of food. The senior French students sold plates of croissants, crackers and cheese and crêpes (pancakes). The food proved incredibly popular and we could have sold even more than what was available. Something to look forward to for next year!

One of the most pleasing aspects of this week was to see so many New Zealand students coming in to the hall at lunchtimes and with their teachers during class time to experience the sights and sounds of another culture. Although the students and teachers involved in the week were exhausted by the end of the week, everyone agreed it was a great success and we are all looking forward to it again next year.

Japanese assistant - On March 12th, Miss Kazue Shoji farewelled students and staff at Kamo after spending 9 months in the Japanese department as an assistant teacher. She will be returning to her job in Japan, where she works in a high school as an English teacher. During her time here Ms Shoji developed a very close bond with many of the students who study Japanese and provided invaluable assistance to Mr McDonald in preparing teaching materials and assisting with classes. It was also a great opportunity for students to practice their Japanese with a native speaker. Miss Shoji was given a great farewell party at Café Hana, a local Japanese restaurant in Whangarei.

From the Prefects

Wow! What a great start to the year we have had as a Prefect Team and as a school. Our prefect vision, “Lifting the Spirit”, has definitely started us rolling in the right direction for a very successful and fun last year at Kamo High School. Our vision was well represented at the inter-whanau swimming sports and athletics, with Prefects showing their true colours and encouraging less enthusiastic students to get involved. Swimming sports was just amazing and by the end of the day the pool looked like the local stream after the floods, but it was all worth it!

Prefects have, for a couple of weeks now, been helping the ground supervisors in keeping Kamo High School a clean and safe place. Thanks to all the students who have come and introduced themselves to them, it’s really great to see you showing your support and enthusiasm to get involved and make the school a better place.

With the ball coming up we have been working very hard to get everything organised and we are well under way to the best ball that students of Kamo High School have ever seen.

Thanks to all the students who have shown such great support to the Prefect Team.

Felix Scheibmair – Head Prefect

PTA Meeting

The next PTA meeting will be held on Wednesday 7 April at 7.30pm in the school library.

This will be an opportunity to hear from our Head Prefects, as well as a verbal report following the recent ERO visit.

GUYS & DOLLS

Work is well under way to create this FANTASTIC! STUPENDOUS GIGANTIC! ENERGETIC! show.

However…. We have a change of venue – the show will now be held in the Forum North Theatre.

Dates for the Performances are:

Having a good time, won’t be a gamble! See you there….

Stationery Update

Things have settled down now, and there are no more queues, thank goodness. There is a hold up on the delivery of the Year 12 LWON Computing – these are not expected to be delivered to the school until at least May. The publishers have updated the version, which is currently still being printed ready for distribution.

We are now in a situation when new stock is being ordered, that sometimes there is a delay in delivery. Such is the case with the Year 9 Science homework books, unfortunately this is to be expected the later in the year that orders are placed.

The Japanese Dictionaries have finally arrived, if you have not received yours yet, please contact me so we can sort it out.

Sheryl Riceman – Stationery Co-Ordinator

Careers Update for Year 13's

Applications for the University and Polytech trip to Auckland and Waikato are now open. This is the only chance these students have to visit three Universities and/or two Polytechs to help in their decision making. Forms are available from the Student Support Centre. The cost is $60.

On Monday 22 March we have Massey University Liaison Officer visiting and on Thursday 1 April Waikato University will be here. If your child is undecided on their University they should attend these talks.

Almost every student has now received an invitation to discuss their career directions with me. Please encourage your child to come to talk through their options when they receive this invitation.

Bev Worthington - Careers Guidance

Gateway

Q. How many Kamo High students have moved into apprenticeships this year?
A. Quite a few…and across many industry groups. We are supported by many, many employers.

Q. How many Kamo High School Students have come back to school this year with clear goals?
A.
Some in Year 13 know where they are going because they have been out in industry and now see the point of their studies.

Gateway has begun well this year with nearly 20 students out on work placement already and another 30 to begin in week 10. Students have been placed into many industries including food processing, hospitality, automotive, hairdressing, engineering and travel.

Gateway Hairdressing

Gateway Hairdressing
Jonelle Dobson

The programme gives students the opportunity to try out potential careers and also gain credits towards national qualifications. The programme can also work well for employers who have the opportunity to get extra part-time help at busy times and can also assess a potential employee before they decide to employ them.

We are very grateful for the support that we get from employers and we would especially like to mention our local employers who are so willing to place our students. Already this year four of our Gateway students have been offered part-time work, most being in the Kamo area and one student has begun her hairdressing apprenticeship at a local hair salon.

Kathy Draper - Gateway Co-ordinator

Golf Tournament

On Monday 15 March our two teams competed for a place in the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Golf Championship. Our girls’s team of Caroline Bond, Miri Joo, Haeji Kang and Youn Sun Kim won the tournament. Our boys’ team of Andrew Hepple, Kyle Campbell, Gavin Ball and Carl Donaldson came fourth. It is the first time that an all girls’ team has won a place in the finals.

Overall, Youn Sun won the Girls’ Gross Championship.

The New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Golf Champs are to be held at Manor Park Golf Club, Wellington in August.

Congratulations to you all and best wishes for the upcoming finals.

Arts News

He toi whakaairo - He mana tangatar

Where there is artistic excellence - There is human dignity

Kia ora, welcome to another edition of “Arts NEws ’04.”

I hope you have had an opportunity to enjoy the “Endless Summer Festival” over the past few weeks.

Many of our staff, students and ex-students have been involved in this year’s Festival, and they have certainly done us proud.

A highlight for me was Opera in the Garden. Opera North’s guest artist this year was Helen Medlyn. If you ever get the opportunity to see her perform - don’t let the chance go by - she would have to be one of the best in Australasia. No wonder it took Opera North 8 years to book her!

What we Offer
As an Arts Faculty our goal is “to increase the awareness and appreciation of the Arts at Kamo High and in the wider community”

As an Arts Faculty we offer specialist courses in: Dance, Drama, Mixed Art, Music, Music Technology, Nga Toi (Maori Arts), Photography and Visual Art.

Next year we are also hoping to offer exciting new courses in Theatre Technology, Photoshop and Digital Imaging.

This is a reflection on where the future is heading for the Arts. Make no mistake there are many opportunities in the Arts for a very successful career. If you don’t believe me……. Just ask Peter Jackson !

We also offer and promote many opportunities to experience the Arts outside the class / school- just for fun, as a hobby, or for “serious” fun. If you would like to promote your organisation, or if you would like to start one, please let me know. One of my goals for this year is to extend my links with the local Arts community. I’d like to help strengthen both your organisation and our students’ appreciation and awareness in the Arts.

The Arts Centre Update
I managed to have a quick look around inside again this week - I was really impressed. Most of the roof is now on, and each space is starting to take shape. I have had several conversations with national suppliers, who can’t believe the level of sophistication we will be offering in this facility.

Arts Council ‘04
The Arts Council is a group of interested (and interesting) students/ staff who are the real driving force behind organising any “arty happenings” at school throughout the year.

Clayton Petera and the rest of the Arts Council have been meeting every Tuesday in S2 at lunchtime to come up with “Arty Happenings”. At the last meeting it was decided to put on a version of “Stars in Your Eyes”- it was decided to just have a lip-synch event. After much jocularity I think

“Lips in Your Eyes” was decided as the name for this event. It will be held in the hall in week 11. The winner will be the entry who looks, moves and acts the most like the real McCoy. A great way to end the term on a high note. Parents are welcome.

Note: Last year several of our students were headhunted at similar events by local organisations to perform at various functions around the city - and were even paid for their time, so take your fun seriously.

If you missed our last meeting, you are still more than welcome. We meet every Tuesday in S2 @ lunchtimes. We need people of all types and ages, so don’t think you have to be a world class “arty“ person to join us. You just have to want to help the Arts. There are plenty of opportunities to show us your leadership or your “followship” throughout the year.

“Is anybody (else famous)out there!?”
If you are aware of any past students who are doing well in the Arts, I’d love to “sing their praises” (they also make great motivational speakers for our students). If you are an ex-student and you’re reading this newsletter, I’d love to hear from you.

Recently I have had several ex-students pop in to see me and share their news with me. It always makes my day to see people “into” what they are doing.

Steriogram in S2
It was great to meet up with Brad Carter from Steriogram the other day. I got quite a shock when he put his head around the corner of my door in S2 … and so did my Yr 12 Photography class - especially Tash (our Arts Council deputy Chair) who was so taken aback she managed to head-butt the door as he opened it. I think I should get him back more often, as it was the quietest they have ever been!

Steriogram’s single “Walkie-talkie-man” has now made it to number one on MTV in Japan. This is huge for the band, and will put them in perfect position for when they release their CD “Scmack” in mid – April in the United States. Way to go guys!

Photo Exchange
Now in its third year, the photo exchange with Henderson High School in Pennsylvania, USA is currently being displayed on the Arts notice board. There are some good examples of street scenes. Check it out soon. We hope to have our return photos on display in the very near future. I will let you know in the next newsletter.

Practice what you preach
Although the finer details are yet to be worked out, Visual Art staff are planning to contribute to the Tai Tokerau Art Teachers Association exhibition. It is hoped that work will be displayed throughout the North in various galleries. Who knows, it might just turn into a regular event. I’ll keep you posted.

I look forward to seeing you all sometime soon.

E noho ra, Kind regards

Ian Pritchard - Arts Faculty Co-ordinator

CONGRATULATIONS
… to our senior volleyball girls and boys teams who are the Northland Champs, fighting through exciting finals matches to take the titles. Elyse Lewis and Warwick Wright were voted “Most Valuable Players” of the tournament and they, along with Erin McCulloch, Charael Anderson, Derek Carpenter, Winiata Morunga, Dwayne Mihaka, Joseph Mihaka and Gene Heperi, were selected in the Northland Tournament Teams. As this goes to print we will have three teams competing at the nationals in Tauranga and we know that our school will be represented well!

… to Nicola Howes and Carli Michelsen who have been invited to attend an enlarged NZ Under 15 hockey squad coaching clinic in Auckland next month – well done!

… to our talented rugby league trio of Iwi Hauraki, Anton Wickens and Gary Nicholl who are members of the Northern Raiders teams and presently competing in a New Zealand wide tournament.

… to ex-student Amanda Broughton who has been selected in the NZ Quarterhorse Youth Team to compete at the World Champs in Aussie in June.

… to our GOLFERS. Yes, our girls' team of Haeji Kang, Mi Ri Joo, Younsun Kim and Caroline Bon are the Northland Champs and will be travelling to Wellington, under the guidance of staff member Dianne Meyer, to compete at the national Secondary Schools' Golf Champs on Tuesday 24 August. Younsun was the top individual golfer, followed 1 stroke behind by Mi Ri. Our boys' team of Andrew Hepple, Carl Donaldson, Kyle Campbell and Gavin Ball also played well and were 4?th.

…to our TENNIS CHAMPS who played on Friday 19 March:

TRIATHLON CHAMPS
Were held at One Tree Point in conjunction with the Northland Secondary School Champs. 16 of our students participated in the 400m swim, 10km cycle ride and 3km run. Best results were Max Rohwerder 1st individual senior boy and 2nd in the teams event (as a 1 man team) and Jenna Hansen 1st individual senior girl and 3rd in the teams event (again as a 1-man team).

CRICKET is almost drawing to a close and I must mention my appreciation to the following people who have made cricket happen at our school: Phil Durham (Girls' Cricket), Alan Whatmough & Nick Henderson (3rd Grade), Julian Van Veen (Under 15s), Mel Millar (1st XV) and The Pinnys.

ATHLETIC CHAMPS A great day at Kensington Park with more than 300 students participating. The relays were held at school the following day and Waima with two 1st placings, a 2nd and a 3rd was the Relay winner, however total Athletic Whanau results were: 1st Rangi, 2nd equal Tapere & Waima, 4th Moana and 5th Kaha. The annual staff –v- students relay saw the students as the victors, although they did run two senior boys intead of 1 senior and 1 junior!!! A full list of individual results should be printed in the Northern Advocate shortly, but the School Champs are:

A team of 40 athletes represented Kamo High School at the Northland Secondary Schools Champs and more than 20 were placed in events. Those receiving 1st placings were: Jnr Girls: Stacey Michelsen in 200m & 300m, Simone Ackermann in 800m & 1500m and Kendra Going in 3000m open event; Jnr Boys: Dane Job in 800m; Intermediate Boys: Nathan Steel 400m; Snr Boys: Alex Auld in High Jump.

Alex, Simone, Kendra, Stacey and Dane all qualified to compete at the North Island Secondary Schools Champs at Inglewood next weekend, but unfortunately only Stacey and Kendra are able travel down and we wish them all the best!

WINTER SPORTS TEAMS

HOCKEY players have trialled and the 1st XI Girls' and Boys' teams are well underway with training. In fact, the boys have had their first game already, against Westlake Boys High and just narrowly lost 2-3, a great start for this young team being coached by staff members Ashok Unka and Phillip Kippenberger. The boys have a very important Rankin Cup challenge match against St Pauls College, Hamilton on Thursday 6 May 1:30pm on the water turf, and support from the community would be greatly appreciated. The 2nd XI girls' team will play Division 1 this year, and three girls' teams are entered in the Collegiate Division 2 grade.

NETBALL trials have been completed and 6 teams named with practises beginning this week. Unfortunately, however, we are 1 coach short so any volunteering parent, aunty, Grandma, friend would be appreciated. Call the Sports Office. Our number 1 and 2 teams are looking particularly strong and will be preparing not only for the local competition, but also for the Rosehill College exchange, the Northland Secondary Schools' Champs and Tournament Week. The NETBALL ACADEMY sessions have commenced with a team-building and confidence session taken by Kahu Sutherland and a fitness session by staff member Leigh Morgan. Special guest at breakfast last week was 2004 Olympic Triathlete competitor, Sam Warriner.

The list of SOCCER players for the inter-school Wednesday afternoon competition which is played next term, is very long and it looks as though we will have enough players for at least 2 boys' and 2 girls' teams. This is great, but there is a problem. Games are played anywhere between Rodney, Dargaville and Kerikeri so of course transport is needed. One school van will not be sufficient, therefore kind, generous, supportive parents are required, please! If we do not get enough parent helpers, we will not be able to enter more than 1 or 2 teams. Please phone me at the Sports Office 435-1688 if you are able to assist. Presently senior students Daniel Richards and Lena Wehreim will be taking training sessions each Wednesday after school for all those intending to play soccer for school.

The RUGBY LEAGUE 1st XIII competition will be played on Wednesdays after school beginning 12 May and an Under 15s tournament to be played on Sundays. The Northland Rugby League are offering assistance with coaching training and transport but once again parents will need to assist also. Please phone me at the Sports Office 435-1688 if you can help.

BASKETBALL – The Senior Boys' and Girls' teams are today in Rotorua competing in the Western Heights Multi-Sport tournament. Adrienne and Steve Wong, and Faye Peacock are once again assisting with coaching and there is a definite increase in the number of players wanting to play in the local Friday night secondary schools competition starting next term. Practises are held for boys on Wednesdays after school and for girls on Thursdays.

RUGBY – It saddens me to report that Kamo High School will not be fielding a 1st XV team this year in the Under 18s Northland competition. Coach Ian Smith organised pre-season trainings at school on Tuesdays and Thursdays but after several weeks the lack of interest shown by the boys resulted in the team being abandoned. There are definitely fewer senior rugby-playing students at school this year than in the past, but to not have enough for a 1st XV is very disappointing. It is noted that we have a large number of students playing for various Clubs in the JB9 grade this year who will be eligible and capable of playing in the 1st XV Under 18s grade next year. We look forward to the school being able to field a strong team then.

SPORTS COUNCIL This year will be led by Daniel Richards and Michelle Scott-Davidson as Chairpersons and Toni Pivac as Secretary. First goal is to have sports equipment (touch balls, basketballs, beach volleyballs & elastic net, frisbees, cricket bats & balls, etc) available for lunchtime use by students who will be able to collect gear from the Sports Monitors at the gym during the first 10 minutes of lunchtime and return same during the last 10 minutes of lunchtime.

Another goal is to ensure sports teams are photographed for the notice board and the school year book.

A students –v- staff lunchtime challenge is being arranged shortly – maybe the result of the athletics relay race can be reversed – look for results in the next newsletter!
