BOT Annual Meeting: The current Board has now completed the first of its three-year term of office and the annual meeting was held on Tuesday 17 May. Reports were presented to the meeting by the Chairperson and Principal, and included an annual document compiled by a large number of staff which is a detailed, in-depth summary of the year. The financial report for 2004 was adopted pending receipt of the audited copies. The Election of Officers then took place at the monthly meeting which followed, and all Board members were re-elected to their positions and committee portfolios.
Board Policies: The Board has decided to change the review cycle of its governance policies from annual to biennial, although as previously, should it be necessary, any policy can be reviewed at any time. Of particular note is a recent review of the Complaints Policy and related procedures. These have been modified to include a flow-chart which is much easier to follow, and reflects the importance placed on the correct processes to deal with any concerns raised, and the prompt, appropriate attention and responses required in accordance with this policy.
Copies of the annual reports or any Board policies are available for members of the school community to read and can be requested from the school office.
Claire Watts - Chairperson
If parents are dropping their child off to school in the morning or picking them up in the afternoon, please avoid Wilkinson Avenue . This area is very busy with buses and students, and additional cars add to the congestion and increase the risk of a possible accident. Arrange with your child to meet you in one of the nearby streets (which are less congested). It would also be good for parents to reinforce road safety to their children; some students are too blasé about crossing the street without thought to their safety. Thank you for your support on this matter.
Staff on duty in the mornings are concerned with the large number of students who buy lollies, packets of crisps, soft drinks, pies, etc, for breakfast. Growing teenagers need to have a suitable breakfast, and junk food is not a good way for them to start their day. Encourage students to make healthy choices for breakfast. For example choose from one or two of the following cereals: (weetbix, muesli, porridge) and milk, toast, muffins, bagels, bread, fresh fruit (great to eat on the way to school if time is limited), eggs, dried fruit and nuts, or smoothies. If you would like more information, please contact your child's Health teacher or one of the Food Technology teachers.
Karen Crowe – Senior Manager - Students
The first of the meningococcal vaccination rounds is now completed. Thanks must go to the team of Public Health Nurses who put in a lot of work and effort to ensure it all went as smoothly as possible. Thanks also to our staff and students for their part in the smooth running of the programme. The next round of vaccinations will take place on 28/29 June. Please remind your child it is important that they eat breakfast.
John Rummery – Senior Manager - Staff
Last month your daughter or son received an NZQA Qualification's booklet that included important information and the table of fees set by the Minister of Education. Within the next two weeks your daughter or son will received a school listing of the qualifications she or he will be sitting this year, including the total fees. These qualifications fees are payable to the school now. The final date for payment is 29th July.
Please apply for Financial Assistance if you feel you may be eligible (see below). Another form of assistance we, as a school, can offer is to start taking payments towards the total cost of the fees from families immediately. It is perhaps easier to pay smaller amounts on a weekly basis from now until 29th July, than to have to find a much larger sum of money all at once. If you wish to make use of this means of fee payment, contact the school office or Mrs Meyer for details.
Financial Assistance
The Minister of Education announced the availability of financial assistance for entry fees to national secondary school qualifications. There are three categories that qualify for assistance:
Caregivers who receive Work and Income or Study Link benefit
Families with a joint family income that is below the threshold for receipt of a Community Services Card
Families in which more than one child in the family is entering qualifications this year, irrespective of income
For further information (including the application form) please see Mrs Meyer or go to the Secondary School Qualifications section of NZQA website (www.nzqa.govt.nz) and click on the "Fees & Financial Assistance" link. Application forms need to be completed and returned to Mrs Meyer by the end of this term. If financial assistance is granted, a new invoice will be printed and the remaining fees will be due by 29th July
Dianne Meyer – NZQA Co-ordinator
Did you know that you can use your Telecom account to help Kamo High School get a share of the $10 million donated to schools each year through Telecom's School Connection programme? It costs you noting to be a sponsor. All you have to do is nominate Kamo High School , and then your Telecom account can start earning points for the school. These points can be redeemed by the school for audio visual equipment or help with the internet connection costs.
To become a member, simply enrol online at www.telecom.co.nz/schoolsponsor , or Telecom on 123. We thank you for your support.

During one week of the last school holidays two of our Year 13 students, Monique Jellick and Chani Andreé, were placed at Fonterra Kauri Site, spending time in both the Laboratory and Environmental Departments. This was followed by two more brief visits when the girls were assessed on-site by one of Fonterra's workplace assessors.
The placements were the first ever at Fonterra Kauri Site and resulted in the girls both achieving eight Level 3 credits. A huge amount of planning and co-ordinating by Fonterra's Training Co-ordinator, Michelle Brljevich, went into these very successful placements. The Fonterra staff were very impressed by the high level of motivation shown by Monique and Chani and the girls have featured in the Fonterra's nationwide newsletter.
Well done girls!

A group of 50 students travelled to Opononi Area School from the 13th to the 15th of April for the 30 th annual Tai Tokerau Secondary Schools' Festival. We were well represented, performing a solid, traditional programme and a great time was had by all. Many thanks to the people of Tahekeroa Marae for their outstanding hospitality and to Otangarei School for the use of some of their kapa haka uniforms. A special thanks to Mrs Donna Mahanga and Pereri Junior Mahanga for the huge commitment made to our kura last term, with tutoring. Tenei te tuku whakawhetai ki a koutou katoa. Kia ora rawa atu!
Kapa Haka – where to next?
The group is entering the secondary division of the Waitangi Cultural Competitions (Tai Tokerau Regional Contest) to be held on Saturday 18th June at ASB Stadium. Practices will be held every Sunday from 10.00am until 5.00pm in the school hall, starting this Sunday 22nd May. ALL members are expected to attend every practice. This is imperative as we only have five.
Nga Manu Korero Regional Contest
This takes place from Sunday 29 th May to Tuesday 31st at Pompallier College . A group of nine students and I will represent our school at this event where we hope to be successful in securing a place for the national contest in September. Our school representatives are: Kauangarua Kingi (Junior English); Louisa Dearlove (Junior Maori); Kellieanne Hunt (Senior English) and Leon Ward (Senior Maori). I am still seeking a representative for the Senior Bilingual section, so if anyone out there is interested, please contact me urgently.
“Mana Wahine” & “Mana Tane” Workshops
40 students have been selected to participate in these workshops under the direction of Mr Kipa Munro of Hauora Whanui. The focus of these workshops is to study and become skilled in the art of “Mau Rakau.” This includes the learning of the pertinent philosophies and tikanga, with the objective of adapting these same aspects of self-discipline into everyday life, for personal benefit and the benefit of our entire school community. The introductory two hour workshop will be held this Thursday and will be followed by a regular one-hour session each week for the rest of the term. Please contact Mrs Crowe, Mr Pou or myself if you have any queries.
Lucille Spring – Teacher of Te Reo
Congratulations to Clim Lammers (Year 12) and Julie van Geluwe (Year 13) whose entry has been accepted into the final of the Northland Schools' Culinary Challenge. Theirs was one of many entries from throughout Northland to be selected in the last eight. The pair will have three hours to prepare and present a menu they devised from a set list of ingredients. They will be watched by a panel of judges from the hospitality industry, who will then taste their food. The next couple of months will be busy perfecting their dishes and developing their teamwork. Congratulations and best wishes from us all.
A big thanks again to our sponsors, Copthorne Resort & Hotel Bay of Islands, Northland Polytechnic and HSI. Contestants, your time starts now!!!
Craig Hayman – Teacher of Hospitality

The item is coming along incredibly well with an enthusiastic cast and crew. Due to so many schools entering this year the event will be held over two days, 4 th and 5 th July, at Forum North. We are still trying hard to raise money to help with costumes and set, so keep an eye out for our raffle coming your way, with wonderful prizes donated by local businesses. We are also hoping to invite the public to our final dress rehearsal in Week 9 of this term, so you have a chance to view our spectacular piece. We will keep you informed of dates and times.

“33.3 Film Productions” is a student driven short film club. Recently formed, its prime interest is to make short and interesting movies based on random themes. At fortnightly meetings, production teams are formed, themes are selected and then it's down to each team to come up with a short (33.3 second) film. It is hoped that the results will be a regular feature in the school calendar and that a Film Festival will be created as a result.
“33.3” meets in A1 every second Friday at lunchtime - watch out for student notices, or see Mr.P for more info.
“Eye Can See” is the name given to the Year 11 Photography students' first show of their work. The work is based around the self portrait and is captured using shadow, reflection and cropping.
This will be the first major exhibition of artwork that is hung in our new framing system and is a new initiative to promote the value of well presented works of art within the school grounds.
The exhibition will be opened at 5.30pm on 13 June and will run to 1 July. Refreshments will be provided. All parents / family and the general public are invited. The work will be displayed in the Arts Centre corridors. Photographs will be for sale (unframed only) and will be available after 1 July.
Kevin Capon will be holding a two day seminar on 20 and 21 June with photography students, the subject being “Developing Creative Potential”.
Finally, a request - does anyone have any gourds , small or large, that they would be willing to donate to our Art department? They will be used to decorate and also make musical instruments. Please contact the Arts Office if you can help.
At present we are collating the Colour Awards. If you have a son, daughter, friend, sister, brother, etc., or yourself, who has achieved recognition in the arts fields, please pick up a nomination form from the Arts office.
If anyone requires any information on the Arts, we have two notice boards within the school, or you are welcome to call at the Arts office.

Shakespeare Festival
Two groups from our Year 12 and 13 Drama class were entered this year in the local competitive Shakespeare Festival, both performing scenes from “A Midsummer Night's Dream”. Both groups were excellent, and one of them was chosen to represent Northland at the National Festival in Wellington at Queen's Birthday weekend. This group was directed by Kowhai Wilkie, who has spent some time at the Globe Theatre in London , and her direction of her brother, Hakopa, combined with his talent, won him the Best Actor award at the festival. This was a thrilling result for us!
We are holding a Shakespeare night in the school hall on the evening of 25 May to help raise funds for the group's trip to Wellington . This will include the two senior groups as well as groups from other levels performing excerpts from “Othello”, “Macbeth” and “Romeo and Juliet”.
To prepare for NCEA exams, senior Drama students need to see professional theatre, so we are planning trips to Auckland to see “The Duchess of Malfi” (a revenge tragedy) and “Krishnan's Dairy”. We have already travelled to Auckland University to see their outdoor production of “Romeo and Juliet”.
Jessie Bell - HoD Performing Arts
Winter season sports are underway and Kamo High School has good representation in a number of codes. Already teams are proving to be a threat in the competitions.
RUGBY
The 1st XV, under the guidance and coaching of Tim Eves and Brad Kini, are currently second in the Northland wide U18 competition and recently defeated Whangarei Boys' High School to win back the Mason Cup. Our Sevens team, coached by Ian Smith , also defeated Whangarei Boys' High School in the final of the NSSSA Condors Seven tournament and have won the right to represent Northland at the NZ Secondary Schools' Sevens Tournament in Monday 6 th June (Queen's Birthday weekend) at Hamilton. Any offers of funding or support to help our Sevens team travel south would be appreciated.
The JB8 team, coached by Alan Pye, Peter Lund and Stephen Bradley, remain unbeaten in their grade and are averaging in excess of 40 points per game. The JB7 team, coached by Bo Davis, Luke van der Lubbe and assisted by Darryl Davies , have won their first two competition games.
In addition to the boys' rugby we also have a keen girls' team who are being coached by Tiritaa Te Whata. They competed strongly in the recent Sevens tournament and will begin their mid-week competition shortly.
While it is great to be able to acknowledge the success of our teams, rugby at Kamo High School is more than just winning. It is about getting pupils into sport, allowing them to experience pride in representing their school, giving them the opportunity to develop new skills both physical and inter-personal, and allowing them to enjoy the sense of belonging to a team who share common values and goals.
The Kamo High School Rugby Club would like to thank the following businesses for providing goods and sponsorship to our rugby teams:
Oxford Trust (who provided funding for the purchase of new jerseys )
Laurie Brett Dentist A1 Taxis
Kamo Hammer Hardware Kamo Super Liquor (for ice)
North End Contractors Kamo Pharmacy
Regency Pies Kamo Physiotherapy
Kensington Tavern (after match food)
We appreciate the assistance our teams are receiving and would encourage the support of the above businesses. Rugby is certainly happening at our school!
NETBALL
Following two good wins in the grading round, our No.1 netball team has qualified to play in the Premier Grade in the Whangarei Senior Netball competition, the first time for a number of years our school team has been in this top grade. This is an exciting challenge for our players ( Erin McCulloch, Loren Reti, Elyse Lewis, Kylie Wright, Rita Himiona, Melanie Dykzeul, Kahu Dick and Chani Andree) . The team, a dedicated and talented group, is fortunate to be coached by experienced Gladys Himiona .
We also have two other senior and four junior teams all coached by volunteer parents and staff, whose efforts in coaching are much appreciated.
As well the Netball Academy has 15 talented junior players attending early morning Tuesday sessions in an endeavour to improve their fitness and increase their netball skills.
HOCKEY
The 1st XI Girls got off to a flying start to their 2005 season in the Women's Premier Grade with two good wins and are matching up strongly to the senior women's'teams. This is a very young team and coach, Barbara Michelsen, is pleased with their progress as they build towards peaking for the NZSS Federation Cup tournament to be held here in Whangarei during August.
The 1st XI Boys, coached by Stephen Gillingham, recently played a Rankin Cup promotion/relegation game against St Paul's Collegiate of Hamilton. St Paul's was a very determined and more experienced team than our boys and took the match 3-1. This means our boys will now contest the NZSS India Shield tournament in Dunedin in August.
The 2nd XI Girls' Team is showing true dedication to their training and fitness programme and the results should show through as the season progresses. John Campbell is coaching.
In the Collegiate grade we have three girls' teams and two boys' teams – thank you to Teschna Christie, Sharlene Jurisich, Mary Rose Houston, Warren Litchfield and Jim Le Lievre, who are coaching these teams.
We have a number of hockey players who have been selected in Northland age group training squads and we congratulate and support them.
SOCCER
The increased number of students wanting to be involved with mid-week secondary school soccer has resulted in our school having three girls' teams and one senior boys' team participating. The games, played on Wednesday's at 4:00pm on a home and away basis, started last week with a massive win to the boys and narrow losses to the girls. We are very appreciative of a donation from IC MOTORS which will go towards the new playing strip for our 1st XI Boys' team – they will look smart and play smart!
We are very proud to have a number of students who are playing in the North Force Reserve team: James Robbie, Marcel Mills, Jonas Scheitza, Nathan Steel and Ben Heffey.
BASKETBALL
Earlier this year our senior girls' and boys' teams competed in the huge Western Heights Multi Sport Tournament held in Rotorua, with pleasing results – the girls placed 5th in Division 1 (Rita Himiona chosen as MVP) and the boys 3rd in Division 2 (Scott Wong chosen as MVP). The Friday night schools' competition starts this week and we will have three girls' and two boys' teams participating. Adrienne and Steve Wong are the driving force behind basketball at our school and we thank them for their efforts.
RUGBY LEAGUE
This year we have a strong league team who got off to a really good start in the schools competition with a decisive victory over Whangarei Boys' High School. The team is also entered in the NSSSA two-day tournament on 13th and 14th June. The Northern Advocate recently published an article on one of our school's rising league stars, Iwi Hauraki, who has been invited by the NRL Paramatta Eels Club in Sydney for a six week trial period and then a possible contract. Iwi is a multi talented sports person, being a previous Kamo High School Athletics Champ as well. We wish him all the best in pursuing his rugby league dream.
CONGRATULATIONS
To the Senior Volleyball Teams who again did us proud at the nationals, the Girls' Team by qualifying for Division 1 and gaining 14th place (in New Zealand – not bad!), and the Boys' Team just missing out on Division 1 but winning bronze medals in Division 2. More than 60 teams from all over New Zealand compete at these Champs and the standard is extremely high.
At the Northland Senior Champs (won by both our girls' and boys' teams) the following players were selected from all participants as:
Boys:
Best Blocker Roy Griffin
Best Hitter Warrick Wright
Best Setter Derek Carpenter
Best Passer Brian Te Tai
MVP Warrick Wrigbt
Girls:
Best Field Izumi Furuyama
Best Hitter Elyse Lewis
MVP Erin McCulloch
FURTHER CONGRATULATIONS to the following students on their fine achievements:
NICOLA HOWES - Member of the Whangarei Heads team which won GOLD at the District Patrol Life Saving Champs recently. This championship event was held between the best northern region teams (Raglan north) and top South Island teams. The local team was not expected to win, therefore the first placing was a well earned surprise!
…and again NICOLA HOWES for being selected in the NZ Under 18s Hockey Team. Nicola is definitely a multi-talented sports girl.
To KELLY DURHAM and KATIE MULLENGER who, earlier in the year, were selected as Northland cricket representatives.
To OLIVER BONE for his great results in the Surfing competitions in the Under 16 division, both locally and at national level.
Our Sports Department is happy to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of our students, just contact me with any results, please.
LUNCHTIME CHALLENGES
The Sports Council students are holding special “fun days” in the gym each Thursday during lunchtime. Last week it was indoor soccer, this week is uni-hoc and coming up are basketball, indoor cricket, and indoor netball. The students have also issued a challenge to the staff for a lunchtime “King Ball” challenge on Tuesday 31st June.
CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPS
If everything is going to plan and the weather has been kind, we should have held our Cross Country Champs & Fun Day yesterday at the Kamo Recreation Ground. This is an inter-whanau event and could make a difference to the overall points table.
