"Encourage the Innovative; Achieve Academic Excellence; Embrace Positive Citizenship"

Dear Parents
Kia Ora Tena Katou Katoa

You will have read in the media recently about changes being introduced into the school bus transport system. The potential effect these changes have for our students is that no one will be entitled to use school bus transport to get to their nearest school, unless they actually attend that school. This means that students of Kamo High School who use school bus transport to get from their home to Whangarei Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools, or Tikipunga High School, will no longer be entitled to do so. (Similarly, of course, students of Whangarei Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools and Tikipunga High School who catch our buses and then pay a feeder service to get to their school of choice will also have that “free” service removed.)

Information we have, however, indicates that the current entitlements will continue for the next several years, at least, and so there is no immediate crisis for parents.

We are very aware of the huge impact this could have on hundreds of students, and are communicating our concerns to the ministry in the strongest possible way. While officials at the ministry have initially responded sympathetically to what they consider the special circumstances which exist in our city, and have said they wish to hold discussions with us on how best to address the situation, nothing specific has as yet been suggested.

The period for submissions has been extended until late November, and until that date there will be no changes introduced immediately. We interpret that to mean the current system will continue for next year at least. We are aware that any change of this magnitude will have serious impact on many families in our community. The best I can offer at this stage is to keep you informed as developments are discussed, but I assure you the administration and the Board are very conscious of your interests in this regard.

Richard L. Abel
Principal

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

Parent Contribution - Every year the Board reconsiders the amount of the annual parent contribution asked for from each student so that any change can be recorded in the school prospectus for the following year. We usually have a good response to the request for this donation, and this year the response to date has been even better than usual so we have decided once again not to increase the contribution. In 2006 it will remain at $70 for one student and $95 for two or more students from the same family. Many thanks to those of you who have already paid for the current year. The donation can be paid to the school office at any time and remember to keep your receipt to claim on your next tax return.

Property Development - We have almost completed all the development included in the Board's current property plan and we are now gathering ideas for the next 10 year plan. We would welcome any suggestions you might have, in writing please, addressed to the Board of Trustees - Property, c/- the school office.

Claire Watts - BOT Chairperson

PARENT CONTRIBUTION

Thank you to the many parents who have paid their Parent Contribution and outstanding subject & sports fees in response to our recent posting. All families who have paid their Parent Contribution this year will receive a copy of our 2005 School Magazine at the end of Term 4.

Shirley Kearney – Executive Officer

HEAD PREFECTS

The ball was a fantastic night and all the months of planning eventually paid off. A big thank you to everyone involved, especially the PTA for their tremendous contribution on the night.

Coming up is the school 1950’s Rock and Roll social. We are looking forward to another fun-filled night. See you all there!

Erin McCulloch, Jahnea Garden, James Robbie & David McAteer - Head Prefects

• Wednesday 29 June at Hukerenui - Holly Reti and Jordan Smith

Karen Abel – Year 9 Dean

The Junior Ambassadors are a group of Year 9 and 10 students who play a vital part in making Kamo High School a better place for the junior students. So far this year we have organised an interclass sports championship which will take place next term, a fun and exciting assembly to teach the Year 9 and10s to value their talents (look out for this next week), and we have many more great ideas about breaking the boredom often felt during lunchtimes for those coming from schools with a lot of activities. Every year we travel to local contributing schools to inform them of the benefits found when attending our school. We also walk to Kamo Intermediate and go to every class, answering their questions about our school and high school in general. This year we are more proactive than ever. We have a great bunch of enthusiastic students who all have a lot of great ideas to put into play around the school. We are looking forward to continuing to change the junior school for the better.

Eddie Monk-Fromont and Leila Nicholson

“Open Afternoon and Information Evening”

for Year 8 Students and any New Students, and their Parents.

Wednesday 17 August 2004

The school will be open from 4.00pm for guided tours of the school – starting from the school office foyer, an opportunity to see students' work and for informal conversation with various staff. The last guided tour will start at 5.30pm. There will be a display in the school hall from 6.30pm – 7.00pm.

At 7.00pm there will be a formal presentation in the hall. This will include an address from the Principal, Guidance Counsellor, and current students, and student performances.

NZQA QUALIFICATIONS

Extensive NZQA qualifications information is on the following website: www.ncea.govt.nz

NZQA Qualifications information leaflets were issued in March this year. If you did not receive one or have misplaced it, you may get another either from the NZQA website or from the school office. We will post a copy to you if you wish.

Qualifications fees are due by 29 July, which is the first week of Term 3. Thereafter, we will still accept payment but a $25 late fee must be added to your invoice. Financial assistance is still available. Please apply or contact Mrs Meyer for eligibility criteria.

Help your son or daughter maintain focus on qualifications. Check your child's Student Planner for the record of standards assessed and those achieved. Students should be recording results as they complete assessments. They will need this record at the end of the year when we ask them to verify their results.

Dianne Meyer - Qualifications Co-ordinator

STUDY SKILLS AND SENIOR EXAMINATIONS

Senior classes have been, or will soon be, introduced to a study skills booklet which will help them get their notes in order, organise their thinking and approach to assessment, and make a study timetable. Now is the time to start preparation (not one week before exams at the start of Term 3).

Extra help is available on the school web page. Click on ‘Admin’ and ‘Study Without Tears” (SWOT) will appear. It has five extremely useful sections, with questionnaires to clarify understanding and show you were you are at. Senior examinations are extremely important as an indicator of likely success at the end of the year, with enough time left to fix any inadequacies in performance. They also play a vital role in compassionate consideration applications, and every year we have students who for one legitimate reason or another can’t attend an external assessment and depend on previous performance.

Parents, please encourage your students to get prepared and give themselves a chance of success.

Bruce Furrell – Senior Manager: Curriculum

EXAMINATION SUPERVISION

We are wondering if there are any parents, grandparents, or others in our community who would be willing to assist us in the supervision of internal examinations, being held during early August. You would appreciate that this is a time of particular demand for teachers, with the marking that results from students sitting the examinations, and assistance in the supervision would be a wonderful support. We will provide training, but it is a very straightforward task. Anyone who feels you could offer any time at all – even for just one morning or one afternoon - is invited to leave your name and contact details with the office and we will get in touch with you closer to the time.

READER/WRITER ASSISTANCE

If your child needs reader/writer assistance during formal assessments, please contact me by e-mail (beryl.smith@kamohigh.school.nz) or letter so that I can arrange this. If you have any documentation to support your case which you have not yet sent to us, could you please do so. This applies particularly to senior students.

Beryl Smith – CALS Department

CELLPHONES

In the past, most students have managed the use of cellphones appropriately. Unfortunately there have been some recent cases where this is not so. Only Year 11-13 students are permitted to bring a cellphone to school. Students in Years 9-10 are not to bring cellphones to school. If there are extenuating circumstances which require a junior student to have a cellphone, written permission seeking an exemption can be addressed to Mrs Crowe.

Cellphones are to be turned off and out of sight during class time. The school will take no responsibility for lost, stolen or damaged phones. If the telephone rings or is used during class time, a teacher may impound it and the usual school procedures for return of property will apply. That is, a letter will be sent home and the phone must be picked up by a parent or caregiver. The school will not accept responsibility for any phone which is not picked up within four weeks.

Karen Crowe – Senior Manager: Students

MATHEMATICS

NUMERACY There are a few students in Year 9 who have very poor recall of their basic facts (times tables etc) and who are struggling to cope with the Year 9 Mathematics programme. I am proposing to run lunchtime tutorials for the rest of this term, and next term to assist these students. If your son or daughter brings home a letter inviting them to attend these tutorials, please encourage them in a positive way. They will learn some games that they can play with you at home and some skills they may even be able to teach you.

MATHEX Assessments are over. Now the junior classes are practising for the annual Northland Mathex competition to be held at Whangarei Boys’ High School on August 5th. There will be an interclass competition on the afternoon of July 6th which should be a lot of fun. The Kamo High School teams will be announced early next term.

Dianne Anson - HOD Mathematics

STUDENT SUPPORT CENTRE NEWS

Congratulations to Natasha Foster and Kirsty Hansen for their award-winning speeches representing Iraq at the Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) in Auckland.

“Express IT!”

We are again running this popular competition with prizes at all year levels for writing poems, songs, stories etc, or artworks on the theme of emotions. Encourage your sons and daughters to enter.

Designing Careers

Kamo High School is taking part in a two year Designing Careers pilot programme. All Year 10 students will have career education in their Health classes to develop a learning career plan and be given assistance with option selection. This will be run with assistance from the Deans and the Careers Advisor. Senior students will have advice on option selection, with groups and individual students being seen by the Careers Advisor and Rina from Career Services. The aim of the programme is to assist young people making the transition from school to further education, training or employment. Parents and students from all levels are invited to make appointments with our Careers Advisor, Mr Lester Rivers.

Sickbay

Parents, please keep your sons and daughters at home when they are sick. Some are returning to school too soon and are passing their bugs on to others. Do we have your correct phone numbers to contact you if necessary? Please keep us informed of changes to your phone numbers.

Margo Irvine, Lester Rivers, Lynette Patterson – Student Support Centre

PTA MEETING

The next meeting of the PTA is at
7.30pm on Wednesday 6 July in the school library.

Parents are welcome to come along to receive detailed information on the successes of
our junior learning programme developments, and future plans.

These students, while adding cultural richness to our school community, have partaken in many activities and sports including the Kapa Haka Group, tennis, soccer, volleyball, school magazine committee, Shakespeare Festival, Culinary Challenge, etc. One of the highlights this term was the International Student involvement in the school assemblies in Week 3. Jessica Markiewicz (Germany), Amalie Clement (Denmark), Mira Graemiger (Switzerland), Jessica Ball (Venezuela), Satomi Nagamine (Japan), Joanne Park (Korea), Saara Malinen (Finland) and Bea Carvalho (Brazil) admirably entertained the school with stories of school life in their home countries. For these students to stand on the stage and speak publicly in English, which is not their first language, is very commendable. Well done.

We are anticipating 14 new students next term and they have all been placed with families. A big thank you to everyone who offered to be considered as a prospective family.

Gaylene Sanford – International Student Coordinator

WORKCHOICE DAY AT FONTERRA

For the second year Kamo High School students have been involved in WorkChoice Day at Fonterra Kauri site. The WorkChoice Trust in partnership with local industries such as Fonterra provides the opportunity for students to explore career options.

Sixteen students and five staff members were invited on 8 June to the Kauri site for the day to gain some insight into what makes the organisation work. Departmental managers spoke about training opportunities available, entry qualifications and personal attributes required in their department. They were available afterwards for students to ask questions about specific career paths. We had a guided tour through the factory and lunch was provided.

Last year's visit resulted in two of our Year 13 students doing a Gateway placement in the laboratory and the Environmental department.

It was a wonderful opportunity for students and staff alike to find out about an exciting industry right on our door step.

Kathy Draper Gateway Co-ordinator

PAST STUDENTS

Craig Rothwell left Kamo High School in 1992 at the end of his 7th form year and headed off to Massey University where he did a Bachelor of Technology majoring in Engineering and automation, achieving First Class Honours. He was awarded a Massey scholarship which he chose not to accept, but instead entered the workforce. Craig went on to work at Glenbrook Steel Mill.

He got his “lucky break” in 2001 when he was offered a job as a systems engineer in the London office of Kvaerner Oilfield Products, a Norwegian company designing and maintaining equipment for sub-sea oil and gas fields around the world. (Craig moved to Expro in Aberdeen in 2003 when the London office closed.) This role allowed him to move from production engineering into core design. Craig designs hydraulic systems that open and close the oil wells on the sea bed, which is specialised work, taking into account varying sub-sea pressure and the difficulties of installation and maintenance at depths ranging from 100-200m in the North Sea, to 1400m for oil fields off the coast of Angola.

His job is extremely interesting and he enjoys the challenges it offers.

POSTIE PLUS SCHOOLTEX LOYALTY PROGRAMME

Thanks to Postie Plus and the Schooltex Loyalty programme for their recent donation of $1,946.22. This funding will be used towards student leadership at Kamo High School. If you are buying school uniform items, consider doing so at Postie Plus – for every item purchased they will donate a percentage of the sale back to the school. Just nominate Kamo High School when making your purchase.

THE ARTS

MUSIC

“The Arts” are really pumping at Kamo, and Music has had some cool success stories!!! The Rockquest heats saw four Kamo bands, plus two Kamo High School/Whangarei Boys' High School combined bands enter. Big Kudos to “Eclipse of Da Nation”, an all Year 10 band that entered and played for our first School Concert this year. Watch this space!

BIG CONGRATS to Morgan McCaskill and Chris Matheson who made it to the finals in the combined bands; and to “Head Shots” - Hayden Clarke, Keelan Callaghan, Luke Westmoreland, Sean Lee and Karl Taylor; and “Down Beats” - Hakopa Wilkie, Winiata Morunga, Nathan Steel and Matthew Easterbrook. They will compete at the ROCKQUEST FINALS - SATURDAY 2nd July. Tickets from TICKETEK. Always one of Whangarei's largest rock concerts.

CHAMBER FESTIVAL WINNERS - Top prizes go to Jamie Lee Wright and Cassi Crayford from “Suss”. They were the regional winners. An all Year 9 group “Wow” -Brad Harkness, Roland Taylor and Daniel Poliquin won ‘Most Unique Group'! And two highly commended awards to: Kamo 1 - Joanna Matheson, Yun Lee, Joanne Park and Ju-an Kim; and Kamo 2 - Jamie-Lee Wright, Cassi Crayford, Jenny Lee and Ju-an Kim. How's that for success!!! A special mention needs to go to Pat Sheild who shared her chamber music passion by coaching Kamo 1 and 2 so well.

“WANNABEES” - A special mention this week about Shaan Antunovich, who was selected to do a “Wannabees” video. It will be aired on TV later this year, and we'd like to wish this talented young lady all the best with getting in the finals.

BIG SING - The “Kamo Chameleons” performed at the big sing on June 13th held at St John's. Conducted by Carol Stanley, they were a credit to our school and won a special prize for Best Performance of a NZ Song. I'd also like to thank the NZCF, Margaret Williams and members of the Musicum Collegium for organising such a wonderful event.

Keep on Rockn' Kamo High.

Mark Harris – HOD Music

DRAMA

The big event recently has been the Shakespeare trip to Wellington, for our winning Shakespeare group, to compete in the Shiela Winn School Festival. Our students were up against some fierce competition. They performed their rendition of ‘Mid Summer Nights Dream' with great skill, and the audience loved them. Their achievement was in winning best “outstanding costume design”. A huge congratulations to all involved - you have done us proud.

More drama success! We learnt last week that Hakopa Wilkie has been selected, on the strength of his performance at the Wellington Shakespare Festival, to attend the National Shakespeare School's Production at Palmerston North in October. He is one of only forty six students from throughout New Zealand to have won this honour.

This Friday the Ugly Shakespeare Company will be performing “Othello” at school for all students interested; this will be a great experience for any drama students.

STAGE CHALLENGE

The Stage Challenge is fast approaching - with just under two weeks left before the big event. We still have a lot of fine tuning to do but we're predicting a great hit on the day. We are having a dress rehearsal run through, at the 1st anniversary of the Arts Centre on 29th June - everyone is welcome to attend and support the cast and crew - entry by donation. Tickets are available for the Stage Challenge event through Ticketek at Forum North. We would love your support. I would also like to thank all the local businesses who have supported us with the raffle prizes and donations. This is greatly appreciated.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Year 11, 12, and 13 Photography classes made three very successful trips to the Dianne Stoppard Photography Exhibition at Tuatara Gallery. These short trips proved such a success we have decided to have weekly lunchtime visits to local galleries. For those students who may not otherwise get the opportunity to visit exhibitions, this is a great chance to widen their outlook on the arts.

Developing Creative Potential Seminar 20/21st June. Kevin Capon is now into his second decade of presenting this fantastic seminar at Kamo High School. 20 keen photography students enjoyed this two day marathon of creativity in A1. Kevin is so inspirational and supportive of our students and I hope he is able to return to Kamo High School for many years to come.

ART

Congratulations to Miss Cromwell's Year 9A. These students have been working extremely well in all mediums – clay, painting, pencil. This has resulted in John Craven winning a national art competition, a huge congratulations to John. Keep up the wonderful work.

Ms Lawn's 11ARM class is in the final stages of finishing their 1.4 unit on Kaitiaki and Gateways. Their folders are looking great with clay models and design. They next move on to “koauau” (flutes) - these will be moulded from clay and with traditional design. A kiln will be built by the students and they will pit fire the flutes. On the 17th June they also went on a trip to Tuatara Gallery to look at the Maori Potter exhibition in conjunction with the Matariki Festival.

TOP ART EXHIBITION

This is an exhibition of 24 folios from Year 13 - 2004 Art students from all over New Zealand, covering Level 3 Visual Art assessments. Kamo High School is holding this exhibition in the Art Centre computer room from the 4th to 8th July. It is open to all schools and to any of the public interested, please check in at the Arts Office first.

ARTS CENTRE BIRTHDAY PARTY

Wow, how time flies! We've had so much fun and success over the last year that we just had to do something.

To celebrate our first year being in our wonderful new Arts Centre, we have decided to put on a range of Arts activities that show off just how talented our students are. Everyone is invited to attend what can only be described as a ‘Sensory Buffet' of arty happenings here at Kamo High School. On Wednesday 29th June the format of the evening will be the opening of a Year 11 Photography exhibition entitled “Eye Can See” at approx 4.30pm, an exhibition of Year 12 prints, various performances in Drama and Music venues, topped off by Miss Meyer's Stage Challenge entry and some Dance items in the hall.

Entry is by gold coin and proceeds will go towards fundraising for the Stage Challenge Team. Bring your friends and family - see you all there.

Kay Haigh - Arts Co-ordinator

SPORTS

Our COLOURS ASSEMBLIES were held last week for all year levels and as a special guest for the senior assembly we were privileged to have David Holwell attend to speak to the students and congratulate the Colours recipients. David attended Kamo High School from 1988-1992 and since leaving has been a professional rugby player for the Hurricanes Super 12, and last season for Leinster Club in Ireland. He was astounded by the outstanding achievements of so many students in such a variety of sporting codes. His message was to encourage students to set goals, strive really hard to achieve them and never give up!

CONGRATULATIONS to the following students who have obviously worked hard at their particular sport (or sports) to achieve at such a high level to be awarded with a colours certificate, badge or bar:

WINTER SPORTS
Our school teams are in the midst of their winter season competitions and it is pleasing to report that we are holding our own and, in some cases, excelling.

The NETBALL No. 1 Team will continue to compete in the Whangarei Premier grade in preparation for the Northland Secondary School Champs and Tournament Week next term. With the transfer to Christchurch of their former coach, Gladys Himiona, they now have a new coach in Marge Rahui, a well known experienced coach.

The 1st XV RUGBY Team is in the top 4 of the Under 18s competition, the JB 8s are unbeaten so far and averaging 40 points per game, and the JB 7s are performing well and currently in third place. School sports jackets and gear bags are available to the 1st XV players for the rest of the year, when they pay their sub.

The SOCCER Teams are doing well in the mid-week Secondary Schools competition, with the IC Motors Boys’ Soccer Team having had just the one loss 0-1 to Whangarei Boys’ High School, our Junior Girls with just the one loss to Pompallier (and they would like to have another crack at them now!), and the Red and White Teams improving as the season goes on. School sports jackets are available to the boys upon payment of their sub.

Both the HOCKEY 1st XI Girls’ and Boys’ Teams are competitive in their grades. Some of our younger players in the girls’ 1st XI are finding the games pretty tough in the Women’s Premier grade, but are sticking to their guns and continuing to show courage, commitment and dedication. The Collegiate Teams are having some wins and some losses but are enjoying this competition.

The RUGBY LEAGUE Team is in the Northland Secondary School finals with Northland College to be played at our school shortly.

Local Secondary Schools BASKETBALL is a non-event at the moment with the Friday night competition at Kensington Stadium not well organised at all. Let’s hope next term sees an improvement.

The RUGBY 7s Team has done exceptionally well this year. First up they won their pool play games at the Northland Secondary Schools’ Tournament and went on to play Whangarei Boys’ High in the final. This game initially ended in a draw, went into overtime, but was finally clinched by Kamo High School scoring the winning try. This victory qualified the boys to attend the annual Condor 7’s New Zealand Secondary Schools’ tournament in Hamilton where they exceeded expectations winning the Bragg Wahlstrom Cup, securing 5th place and the highest ever placing for a Northland team at this tournament. They played 6 games, losing only to Feilding College in pool play and winning the plate final 57-7 against Kuranui High School from the Wairarapa. Well done, boys!

Our team of BOWLERS, Cassie Riceman, Monique Walker, Sarah Dufty and Sara Williams competed at the Northland Secondary Schools’ tournament recently and came away with 3rd place. Well done, girls!

THANKS to the following local businesses for their sponsorship of spot prizes at our school Cross Country Champs: Kamo Hammer Hardware, Kamo Book Shop, Kamo Four Square, Kamo Pharmacy and MacDonalds Kamo, AND

CONGRATULATIONS to our Cross Country Champions:

Senior Girls Simone Ackermann
Senior Boys Nathan Steel
Junior Girls Caitlin Gravatt
Junior Boys Blair Walker

We had 200 runners participate in the Championship events and more than 450 in the fun runs. Whanau points, including bonus points for top 10 placings in the Champs, were keenly sought but KAHA came away with a decisive points difference over Rangi (2nd) and the other Whanaus.

IMPORTANT:
All students involved with winter sports codes must have their subs paid before the end Term 2. We endeavour to keep subs as low as possible but they are needed to cover registrations, first aid supplies, team equipment, some travel, use of uniforms, etc. It is compulsory for all players to pay the team sub if they want to continue to play. It is unfair for some team members to have paid while others have not and we are heading towards the end of the season. Students who have a parent coaching are exempt from paying a sub.

THANKS to all people involved with coaching, managing, umpiring, and supporting our students in their sporting endeavours. Kamo High School Sports Office could not operate without your help.
